PBM stands for Pharmacy Benefit Manager - started officially in 1968
Originally designed to help manage Prescription costs
PBM's play no direct role in the distribution of Prescription Drugs - only the NEGOTIATION of costs
There are Three (3) main PBM's who control roughly 89% of the market*
Owned by CVS Drug Stores
Owned by United Health Care
YOU pay $1066 per year to a PBM (What are they doing to make your life better??)
82% of Prescription cost goes to a PBM (Is that helping Research and Development, or cost containment??)
The biggest insurance carriers OWN their own PBM (Seem like a Monopoly?? Isn't that against the law?)
Three of the country's PBM's capture almost 2% of GDP annually (The IRS doesn't even get that.)
Financial Flows lead?
We could argue that Independent Pharmacy/Pharmacists,
are the main driver for change. They are taking the major brunt of these costs, while working tirelessly to stay in business.
Most "give time, when they haven't got time," and are subject to PBM Audits, Compliance haranguing and requirements that (seem) designed to force them out of the market.
Why don't more people know and understand what is happening; because it's intentionally kept confusing and messy. Maybe you've heard the phrase, "a confused mind never buys?" That psy-op is exactly what is happening to keep people in the dark

"In 2022, Pharma has spent twice as much as any other industry lobbying against fair drug prices"
Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Spent $29.2 Million to buy Law Makers
"PhRMA has also given substantial donations to American Action Network, a conservative “dark money” group that spent heavily on a TV and digital advertising campaign aiming to push against the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act, an aptly-named bill to lower drug prices. The bill was reintroduced in the House in April 2021 after its initial 2019 introduction."
National Community Pharmacists Association PAC $549,000
Independent Pharmacy and Pharmacists are working tirelessly on behalf of their patients and the country. Do you notice a financial disparity? Those fighting on behalf of their patients have less than $600,000 to work with; while those with special interests have TENS OF MILLIONS. It's not a fair fight.
There's too much money to be made.
